Hello, I have a dean edge 09 and I want to replace the pickup with a musicman wired in parallel/series/single coil, I was wondering how I could do that, what 3way switches you guys recommend. Also related, do you guys know where to get any 1 meg linear taper pots, and how would I incorporate that as a tone pot? Thanks in advance
Using a 1M linear pot for a MM pickup is an absolutely terrible idea. You will not hear any change in tonality until somewhere around the last fifth of the rotation. And then the pot will behave as an on/off switch. What you should use is a 250k or 500k audio taper tone pot. The audio taper ensures that the highest setting effectively removes the capacitor from the circuit, but the resistance is quickly reduced to a usable range of a few hundred-thousand Ohms, very early in the rotation, so that the sweep of the pot is functional. The lower pot values are especially critical in this application, because a MM pickup in the traditional parallel coil arrangement has a relatively low output impedance, which means that excessive ranges of resistance compromise the sweep of the pot. For switching, what you want is either a SP3T/DPDT On-On-On mini-toggle switch, or a standard Telecaster style blade switch. Mini-toggles are pretty much all the same, but blade switches vary tremendously, so choose one of the higher-priced models.
So im looking at the pickup I got, and it seems to only have a white and bare wire sticking out of the red one, would switching even be possible
Three conductors? Or do you mean shielded wire with red sheath? You need four conductors to do any coil switching. Is the pickup epoxy potted, or can you solder new leads?
Would it be very hard to add in p pickups and just use the switch I already bought as a pickup selector, because I found some cheap p pickups and I've always liked the sound
