Help with speaker ID

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by tewnty_two, Dec 19, 2014.

  1. So I got a old Peavey 215 cab with 2 different speakers in it
    Here is the first one

And here is the other along with the spec sheet

So does anyone know what the first one is?
Luckily the cab is separated into 2 sections so the speakers don't share the same airspace.
Is it cool to run two different drivers in the same cab in this instance?

    Thanks for your help!

Top speaker looks like an EV oem version of a 15B or 15L. Those 3 small holes in the magnet are mounting holes for a trim back plate used of the retail version.

There are other less common speakers that look very similar though, and there should be some additional part numbers that I don't see.

Probably not ideal to mix these drivers as they have very different TS parameters, but shouldn't cause any damage. It would be a good idea to test for proper polarity.

  3. Thanks for the reply.
I didn't see any other part numbers on the magnet, is there anywhere else to look? Also, what are some good ways to test for polarity and any other parameters that I need to know?

There may be some numbers on the back of the cone or on the spokes of the basket.

Check the web or YouTube for checking polarity of a speaker with a battery.

  5. I found some other numbers on the cone, 79629 but further googling leads me to believe that both of the speakers are PAS speakers. Apparently they make a ev lookalike like you had mentioned, the er 1580c that I had linked to previously.

I figured these PAS drivers are not good for bass guitar after looking at the charts and running them thought some modeling programs.
I found a great deal on an eminence cb15 so I'm going to run that solo, since the cab has separate chambers for each driver, until I save up for the other cb15.

I did the rice dancing test and the cab is tuned to 60 Hz so the cb15 should do ok in there. I might tweak it to +- 55 Hz but I'm not sure if there will be any real benefits from the tweak. The volume of the cab is around 2.7 (accounting for the volume of the bracing ,port and driver).

Any thoughts or comments from anyone on this setup?

Good job for thinking this through logically, it allowed you to understand the conclusion that you arrived at.

There are several speakers like this, including an old Foster cast frame K series that had a similar back but a different front trim with gasket. All are good drivers but how appropriate depends very much on application and expectation.

  7. The first question should be
    how do they sound?
There is always a slim chance that random speakers may work well in that cab.

The easy answer to what will work is Black Widow.
If you go that route, pay attention to which one you get.
They are not all the same.

  8. The PAS didn't sound that great, lacking in the lows. Once I dropped the CB15 in the cb was waaaay better, cleaner and fatter. For $70 the cb is staying in ⚡️
