I am capable of the following repairs on my basses:
    Bridge swap
    Pickup installation
    And that's about it

I have a tony franklin fretless and expect to receive my tony franklin fretted today. As you may or may not know, for some strange reason the tony fretless has the de-tuner on it but the fretted does not. I am much more likely to use drop d on the fretted than the fretless. Is this a difficult swap to make? Any tips?

It's easy. If you need directions, go to Hipshot's website. Shouldn't take more than a few minutes.

Did it. Simple. Only question: seems like the de-tuner post is a smidge shorter than the others. Normal?

Yes, it's normal. I own 5 of them and they all have slightly shorter posts.

it's technically not "shorter" it's just that the mechanism pulls more of the post to the back side (at least to my eye)

Yes there are two plates on the back, accounting for the 'shortness'.
