Hissing and active pickups

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by rabid_granny, Jan 29, 2002.

  1. A local music store just got a Warwick Streamer LX in stock and I gave it a try. Since I like to test two basses at a time at the store, I grabbed a Fender American Series Jazz.

I noticed that the Streamer had this horrible hiss when if I left the bass alone (I didn't like that). The Fender was DEAD SILENT when I wasn't playing (I liked that).

Is this hiss typical for active pickups? I understand they are more acute but do you have to have that god-awful hiss? It reminded me of the Mexican Fender Jazz bass.

Perhaps I had the settings too high on the bass?

    Perhaps.

  3. Usually it's the other way around.

The Warwicks I've played have always been "dead silent" and studio quiet.

I have had Fenders kick up some noise.

Possible extranious factor: cord, amp, fluke, lemon.

The treble boost on a lot of active preamps are prone to hissing. Your options are to turn it down or replace the preamp.

  5. # rm /dev/warwick/battery
    # mv /mnt/new.battery /dev/warwick
