Hiwatt 200 vers. Orange AD200B

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by Stereo_Monkey, Jul 28, 2009.

  1. Hi,

was somebody able to compare the new versions of Orange AD200B and Hiwatt 200?

I am playing the Orange for about 3 years now and I am very satisfied with the sound at small to middle volume. But I would like to have some more clean sound at high volume. Thats what I expect from the Hiwatt!?

Any comments on that or on the new Hiwatts in general?

Never played the Hiwatt but love my AD200B. If you're looking for more clean headroom why not used 400+?

  3. The 400+ sounds great but I prefer the old school looking amps like Hiwatt, Marshall and Orange...

Or slave out of your AD200 into some SS behemoth......but that would be a musical oxymoron of the highest degree:D

  5. Oops, what is a "SS behemoth"?

I think the solution is another ad200b or a Marshall VBA400.

There's only so clean 200w of tubes can get.

    here's what you get

    https://taweber.powweb.com/weber/mass200.htm

then you run the line out off your POWER section to a SS power amp and speakers.

that's the cheapest option to retain your full tube sound.

plus you can use it for recording

Very large and powerful solid state power amp.

  10. the new hiwatts aren't a touch on the old ones but there still good. go for a hiwatt 400! it's already been said but theres only so much clean head room you can get out of 4Xkt88s but if your struggling with that headroom wise i suggest you tell your guitarists to turn down because theres no way a drummer can play that loud :/

  11. My opinion is the AD200b is SUPER loud. I like a little grunt in my sound...but still...its SO loud in my band, and we play hardcore punk. Stick with Orange :p

It wasn't mentioned yet, but what speaker cab(s) are you using. My first thought when a lack of volume arises is more speakers. And, I'd also +1 keeping the Orange head. Maybe you need two of them, but depending on what your speaker situation is.

  13. I am using the Orange full stack with Ornge 115 and 410 cabs.

I think you are right. The AD200B is very very loud. I am running it during rehearsals with master at about 9 o'clock and gain between 9 and 12 o'clock. But even at this setting the tone is a bit to much distorted in my opinion.

Overthinking this tonight I remembered that the tone was different when I bought the amp. So, the solution could be that I missed to service the amp since than :meh:

First, check eq, battery, pre gain, and post gain. If the pre is too high, then you overdriving it, at which point the post will start overdriving as well at low volumes

Orange is dirty by its nature. If you want clean sound at higher volumes there are only two ways: get a slave unit or change the amp.

  16. They are very dirty amps. But...certain tubes will make it a little cleaner. I cant rem which. The Orange forum will explain :)

  17. you don't get cleaner than kt's the orange preamp if its anything like the old or120s should be very clean in theory to
