I Have this beautiful Hofner Bass for 30 years. An amazing sounding instrument with Hofner flats.
I’m trying to get more information on this bass but there’s no visible serial number.
Does anyone know how to ID these instruments?

    Thank you.

According to Hofner their older instruments don't have serial numbers unless one was put on by a retailer such as Selmer. I think you might want to contact Hofner and send them your photos.

It has blade pickups, I think those first came out in 1967.

Post a photo of the back of the bass, especially the body neck joint. That will help.

Based on the photo of the body neck joint it's post 67 because of the squared heal of the neck joining the body. Hofner made that change in early 1968. Based on the headstock logo and closed back tuners body neck joint and control panel I'd say 68 or 69 but it's impossible to tell for sure.

Have you checked the pot codes? They will tell you when they were made and that can assist in helping determine the year the bass was assembled. To check them simply remove the control panel from the body and turn it over. There will be a 7 digit code with the first 4 digits being 250k_ _ _. The 3 remaining digits indicate the week and year the pots were made with the first 2 digits being the week and the last single digit being the year. Here's an example 250k 258, that means the posts were made in the 25th week of 1968.

During 1965 through to 1968 Hofner had a hard time keeping up filling their orders for the 500/1 so most components didn't remain in stock for very long once they were received from the supplier (ie: pots for the control panel). Unfortunately it wasn't until the year 2000 that Hofner implemented a serial numbering system so we'll never know for sure when your bass was made.

    Enjoy.

    Looks like week 20 - 1968

I wonder why they couldn’t keep parts in stock during the late 60’s : )
