I bought a cheap Rogue Violin bass and de-fretted it. I replaced the stock pu's with two EMG Select humbuckers from StewMac (http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electro...Bass,_electric/4/EMG_Select_Bass_Pickups.html). They are 8.2k ohm, and only cost $24. They sound much better than the stock pu's in both highs and lows.

I had to enlarge the mounting holes a bit, and I used some pickguard material to make the mounting rings. They look great (I scratched off the Select script). I also rewired it to only have two volume controls.

I've used this bass to good reviews at reggae shows.
