Does anyone know if Hofner Violin Basses were ever made with a bolt-on neck and a 'natural' wood headstock?

That's what I was thinking too. I can't find anything online about Hofner having those type of necks. There's a 'vintage' one for sale for $150 and since I'm not too familiar with Hofner's, I wanted to ask before I dropped the cash for it.

NICE!! I'm a late Ric bloomer but have a 2012 Ruby Red 4003 and my main player, a 2010 Midnight Blue 4003. It took me 53 years to get my dream bass and now I have 2! I'm 55 now and still living the Ric dream!! I'd LOVE to get a 4003 Noir, the limited edition matte black. Now that's a gorgeous bass, in my opinion!! :) :)

    So Cal
Most likely made by Greco, IMO. German made Hofners did not have bolt-on maple necks, or tuners like the one pictured above... There is quite a bit of Hofner history on their website.

  11. I would say no. But someone with more expertise may enlighten us.

  12. Never seen the maple head stock with those machine heads or a string tree on a 500/1, they did make a bolt on neck in 1984 a kit so you could assemble the bass yourself upload_2018-1-31_7-55-46. metal machine heads they did for a while, but they didn't look like those on your picture I looked at Greco copy machines match what you have so my guess re-labeled Greco upload_2018-1-31_8-7-24.

That has a laminated neck, tuners and string retainer exactly like my Teisco EB-210 "Spud" bass.

I can say with 100% certainty that it is a Teisco. The Greco Hofner copies generally didn't have a zero fret. You didn't upload a pic of the front of the body, but I'm assuming that it has sound holes?

Does your "Spud" bass have the block inlay on the fretboard?
Wow, I forgot about that bass! I've played exactly ONE, and boy was it sweet!
