Been working on a piece where it is all in the high register. The lowest note is E at the 12th fret and highest is C above the 12th fret. The pic shows where I play the thing.

With my usual horizontal bass hold it is impossible to play this on fretless in tune. I tried Bunny Brunel's bass hold and it works great. The bass is more vertical, with the strap OVER the body the bass is now tilted and you can see the board. Bunny uses a strap that has 3 connections on the bass.

This hit me as a big relevation as it made a tricky piece playable. I notice that Jaco, Bunny, Marcus all play the bass more vertical than I do. Anybody else play with this vertical hold?
How about the strap over the body?

Funny you say that. I first saw Casady in 1969 and am a fan. He totally influenced my bass playing as a youth and I always loved the bass hanging low! I had hair hanging low too, just like a young Casady. That was almost 50 years ago ha ha.

Look at where they are playing.
In order to play way up high, they raise the bass up.
To get the proper left hand access angle.

There are plenty of pics with Jaco and Bunny playing lower.
It just depends on what they're doing at the moment.

The strap over the body thing helps to angle the bass up.
Instead of being flat against your belly.

I tend to play more of less at a 45 degree angle.

Yeah I notice Bunny holds the bass like a classical guitar when sitting.

I wonder if it provides better ergonomics for the hands and wrists...
