Ending out what was a very busy July for me, a last-hurrah gig last night.

My first time, and band's third time, playing the Sawdust Art Festival in Laguna Canyon, CA
Playing at Sawdust is a fun gig. We will play there again on August 21.
    Very chill people there.
We played on a Monday night, so not super busy, but still people would come up and listen to our set.
There are 2 performance places, there was a solo guitar/singer near the food area, and we were on the upper deck, and we would trade off half hour sets, 30 min for us, 30 min for the other guy. It works out just fine. Gave me some time to take a couple pics.

Here's our setup on the upper deck area

    IMG_0407.jpg

Since we don't have a drummer, only hand percussion, volumes stay sane and I get all I need out of my Genzler BA-123

Here's our view of the artist vendors from up top
    IMG_0411.jpg IMG_0412.jpg

During one of our half-hour breaks, I was able to snag a fish taco and some pie. very tasty.
    IMG_0408.jpg

and here's a couple action shots taken by a friend in the crowd

    IMG_0415.jpg IMG_0417.jpg

all in all, a no-stress fun gig on a Monday night.

a little extra bonus added here (since this is not "talk keys"): the video of my Who Tribute band (where I play keys, sacrilege) set at OC Fair from Saturday morning. guitar player is a sub, he did good for his first show with us.

    Hey Gary,

You seem to be preceding me on my gigs. :D

I"ll be on the deck at Sawdust during the day on Saturday. Last year the KRB played on the small stage by the food court as a quartet.

    fYliJnxnjkUeQPSvdjf-d07PqU8gZvQp9RJhS_9mT1sC2_vq0lyinl9Uw2mBhRZ9o2MWXcLrreMnFDYsjQ=w1024-h768-no.jpg

Then True Willie will be in The Hangar at the OC Fair on Aug. 9th for an evening show, just about the same time as Steve Miller and Peter Frampton. Great.

Your "Who's Next" set was KILLER! Really nice work. One of these days I'll get out to see you guys. Tell me the truth, is that British accent real? ;)

But back to Sawdust. How did you load in? On the small stage it's easier to go in the side door, shorter carry. But for the deck I'm wondering if you just have to hunker down, go through the front door, drag all the gear across the sawdust, and then schlep up the stairs. How did you load in? Thanks!

One more question. Does your guy in "J" on the Epiphone guitar have another project called "Pickleback Shine"? They look similar.

    Thank you for your indulgence,

    BassCliff

    hello Cliff
yes, I saw your "Kelly Rae Band" name on the "skyline of fame" above the guy's art shop that is right by the upper deck.
KRB gets the best time slots. We, Shades of J, get the crumbs, leftovers. that's ok. crumbs from Kelly are just fine by us.

no, the British accent is completely fake, as is the hair, but he and the regular guitar player have got the schtick down cold.

there are probably 20 more steps, plus about 20 stairs, from the food area to the upper deck. be a man, you can do it.
I loaded thru the side entrance, two trips: one with "Her" (my upright), and one with the rest of my stuff (cab, head, bag of stuff) it helps that I have lightweight stuff

yes, the lead singer and guitar player are both in Pickleback Shine. We play many of the same songs, but Shades of J also does a number of originals (that are good, and consistent with the country/americana theme).

After next Sunday (Agoura), I think our Who band concerts in the park are all done. We are opening for Dog & Butterfly at Hemet Theatre on August 12, but that's a ticketed show.

    Gary!

Ha! True Willie is also playing the Hemet Theater on Sept. 9. But I won't be on that particular gig, working with KRB instead. I guess we don't mind following you around. ;)

But at Sawdust you think the side door is less of a schlep than the front door when going up to the deck? I didn't realize that. Thanks. We'll be bringing small gear. :)

    Thank you for your indulgence,

Excellent reports, Holdsg! Sawdust is fun. My wife and I have gone many times over the past 36 years.
