Since we're heading into the holiday season, thought I'd kick start a thread on this. Played a house party last night for close to 200 well-lubricated 40 to 50 year olds. Was supposed to be a casual jam with friends (most of whom are accomplished musicians) but morphed into what can only be described as a full-on funk/disco/soul revue show involving some of the local glitterati and local musical "royalty". It was louder than most bar gigs I've done and we were packed in pretty tight. Lots of cougars dressed to the nines boogie-ing down. Remember this was a house party: cops were dispatched, just like at those house parties when we were teenagers! LOL. I played some bass, did some lead vox and managed to pull off convincing lap steel runs/vamps on a number of funk, disco and soul tunes. Good times. I have a headache today. ;-) What's your local holiday party gig scene like?
Outside of corporate events, there doesn't seem to be much happening around here. A few local radio stations have their big promotional parties, but that's about it. I played a gig a couple weeks ago on a Tuesday night for a workers' comp claims association. There were about 75 people there, and it was a typical (at least in my experience) corporate event... nothing wild about it. We were basically background music, so it was a fun paid rehearsal.
Our band didn't take any holiday party gigs this year (I think we turned down a couple). I'm on a hiatus now until New Years Eve. Fine by me!
