Hey all, I've been thinking about making the switch to a hollow body bass and the best one in my price range seems to be the Ibanez Artcore. I've also been attracted by the Epi Jack Casady though. JC is a little out of my range but I might be able to manage it. I've also seen a Douglas SPB 1100 which is really in range but I'm not so sure about it. I can't seem to find a good review. Any opinions on these? Is the Douglas worth the money and can you really tell it's cheaper?
I have a JC bass. Its a really wonderful instrument. I just strung it up with DM blue steels, It sounds unlike anything you have ever heard.
Bump. I've been thinking and I think the shorter scale of the Douglas would be good. I'm not really a small person, I can handle a long scale I just think it's more comfortable for me because I'm not big either. So that's steering me towards it. It's just that I can't try it before I buy... anybody have a good experience with one or know if it's worth the money? It would leave me with some for mods if needed so that also points towards it. Is it even worth the mods though? (Mods being most likely just electronics replacements)
I agree. I had a chance to play both the artcore and the jc. Not very long though. If I were to buy one I would go with the jc. While I liked both there was just something about the jc I liked a little better. Can't explain. How about seeing if musicians friend or GC on line can order one, try it and if you don't like it return it and get the other. I thought they had a decent return policy, could be wrong though. Thought I remembered ads from GC where you could try it for 15 days and if not satisfied you could return it? Could be thinking of something else though. Good luck.
I've got a Jack Casady, too. Out of any modern hollowbody basses that are priced under $1K, this seems to be the go-to instrument. Try one out, because that will be the best way for you to understand what so many of us are talking about. It's definitely worth saving up for one.
I'll try and find a way to test a JC. I'm just not big on Epiphone though. I'd have to then spend extra money on a new bridge and I have a feeling I'll find the neck uncomfortable but I guess the only way to know is to try. Plus, if the sound is perfect I think I can deal.
Nothing on the Douglas though? Would it cut through alright? I can't seem to find any good reviews on it and it's one I could only try if I was willing to buy and return if it's bad
JC all the way!!! Never understood why in the world they DO NOT make a 5 strings version!!! Lots of players would grab one instantly (myself included!)
Yeah, it's just, I had an EB-3 and I hated the neck. I feel like the Douglas is an alright investment, especially in comfort, I just can't find any info on how it sounds. They have a good return policy though so I might be able to just try.
See? I am not alone; I know! Look: should they make a five string one, it would become my main bass, I guess. If you look around, to have a decent 5 string HB, either you spend a fortune (Warwick, custom built!) or just cannot find anything decent around with 34/35 scale!!! Damn!!!
I have one of the older Artcore basses (single humbucker, exposed poles, V/T). I think it's a lovely playing bass, very well finished and has a good sounding pickup. I string it with half rounds. Gives a great thumpy tone played finger-style at the neck with the tone turned down a touch. With the tone back up and played with a pick, it has great attack, articulation and cuts through. Lovely with grit pedals, especially if you enjoy using feedback (really easy to control, too - not nearly as wild as other hollow and semi hollows I've played). Having said that... If I was you I'd go for the JC. It'll do everything I've said about the Ibanez, but the PUP is a step up, the three position switch gives three cool tones before you even need to think about adjusting the master tone and the build quality is, IME and from what I hear, very good.
It's a comfort thing Still nothing on the Douglas SPB 1100 though? I've played some SX's that seem to have nothing wrong with them (Not hollow bodies though). They seem to be similar
Allen Woody Rumblekat. Short scale, hollow body, Epiphone, and seem to get talked about in a positive light here. Good luck with your choice!
Didn't even think about that one. I might have to have a look. I think I've ruled the Ibanez out. I think, just to know, I'm gonna try the Douglas and if it's no good I can easily send it back and get a Squire Jazz or something until I can save up for a Jack Casady. If the sound is really there on the JC I think I can learn to live with the neck
