Could this be for real?
It's plausible that someone could have special ordered it and it was a factory conversion.
Fender started making the Bass V (tuned EADGC) in 1961, and there were 5 string uprights well before that.
Headstock looks funky...you can see where the original tuner holes were filled in. If the factory did this, wouldn't they have just not drilled it for a four string in the first place???
Something's odd about it.
Looking at the grain and finish it appears to be exactly the same bass shown here:
Upshot of that discussion is that it looks like an authentic Gretsch one-off custom build.
It is a beautiful burst.
