Sat in at a blues jam yesterday, my friend Dave let me try his
1971 Jazz bass, all original except for P.U.'s. DiMArzio's.
Wow. Light, great feel & sound.
Now I know what you vintage guys are talking about.

I have a 1972 and it is similar to how you describe this '71 that you played. Much much lighter than my '75 p-bass and a thinner neck than many 70s Jazz basses that I have tried. IMHO given how much custom shop work costs these days, these basses remain very good value.

OF course, you MUST play a 70s Fender before buying unless you know where it is coming from. There is SO much variation between them.

    Totally agree.

My 1972 Jazz is killer... Light, super thin neck and sounds great even with replacement DiMarzios.

Having said that, for every great 70's Fender, there is a pile of crappy ones. Mid-late 70's is even worse. Try before you buy for sure.
