How can I get an ATK tone out of an SR?

    Stupid question, I know.
My local GC has a used ATK (older model, bridge pickup only) and it is literally the best sounding bass I have EVER heard in my life. It's like mid range punch with fullness and a voice like I've never heard before..
I'm not wanting to buy a new bass though. I have an SR506ZW that I treat like a child that I don't hate. The tone is good, but it's very... modern, if you will. It's sonic flexibility is fantastic, but I don't really feel like it has its OWN voice like the ATK does.
Would different pickups give it more growl? I've heard good things about Nordstrands in the SR Premiums..
I assume I should ride the bridge pickup more..
    Any suggestions?

If you want the sound of an ATK, get one. No alternative!

Is the atk a lot heavier than your sr? the fullness you're experiencing in the atk may be affected by the wood density and volume as well as the different pickups.

They don't make the ATK as a six string. I only play 6.

No, but the ATK is a 4 and I play a six so.. probably wouldn't be as heavy lol.

If you need 6 strings, you will need to look into something different with a similar musicman-ish pickup.

But in any case, you will never get the SR to sound like that, regardless of the pickups. The SR's bridge pickup is not in the same sweetspot, different neck, different electronics.....

Unfortunately you won't be able to eat your cake too.

An ATK is unique and only comes as a 4 or 5er.

You play 6 and won't change.

ATK tone + you = No.

Buy a 5-string ATK and string it E to C. Problem solved ;)

It is possible to get the SR to sound like an ATK. All the OP has to do is get a few different effect pedals and possibly a different amp.

Anything is possible with enough time and money.

Get the ATK and tune it to 5ths.

    I guess I could try it :p
  14. Yeah, it's going to be near impossible to get an SR to mimic an ATK, the sound is very unique. Pickups probably won't help as ATKs use Ibanez's own triplebucker pickups that won't be a direct drop in.
  15. I wonder if an ATK can be modded for a 6 string. Obviously string spacing would be tighter, but just a thought.

    Otherwise... No ATK for you!

Play the SR with the volume all the way down while a friend plays the ATK offstage plugged into your amp.

  19. My local mom and pop has a used ATK. I haven't plugged it in because it's really heavy and I'm too old for a heavyweight.
