How can I tell what tube does what?

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by kurosawa, Aug 19, 2012.

  1. Looking at a schematic, how can I tell what stage of what preamp tube does what?

I see lots of tubes being sold that offer matching between internal stages, and between pairs and quads, but it seems to me that there's no particular benefit, unless the things being matched perform parallel jobs, like right and left stereo channels, right?

So how can I tell by looking at a schematic what does what, and what needs to be matched, which stages of which tubes have the most impact on tone, and which don't make any difference?

In most cases matching between tube sections is unnecessary. The only place where there could be a benefit is in the phase splitter / inverter. Even then the outputs are going to be a little different anyway.
