So now I have 5 total, accumulated over several years. I like them all and they all sound and play different but is it really necessary to keep 5 when the gigging days are over and mostly likely wont happen again? The wife isn't even giving me any trouble, but something about having this amount of instruments is bugging me...I know its all about "do what you want, play what you want and however many you want" and I am sure there are thousands of opinions but..Anyone in the same boat or thoughts?

I feel no guilt about how many instruments I have even though I only play one of them at any gig.

Owning multiple Basses is neither immoral nor a crime. Whether you gig or not is irrelevant. I’m bald and I own several combs and brushes. Who cares what other people think. It’s none of their business and anyone who thinks there is a limit to what you should own needs to check themselves.

Do you enjoy the Basses? Do they make you happy? Enjoy your Basses and go in peace my son.

Not as crazy as going to Guitar Center and giving them away one by one to those young bassists who go there merely to dream of playing a bass they can't afford.

Other than that, I have four and a few amps...nearly $5,000 worth of gear...and my band hasn't rehearsed since April!

Yes most of them do make me happy..however, I tend to favor 2 out of the 5 for all genres but I guess that decision is down the road

The proper answer is 'own the number of basses it takes to fill the emotional void in your life'.

    TalkFork. I like it!!

I have a dozen and gig only infrequently. I don't care, they're all paid for and the room they're in is fully occupied by music stuff.

I'm surprised that nobody's asked, "How do you get by with only five?"

The proper number of basses is N+1, where N is the number of basses you currently own. This can also be written as S-1, where S is the number of basses that results in divorce.
