Use them, the wear isn't that bad.

Use nickle rounds. Softer than stainless, less damage to the fretboard though you really can't avoid it. Ever think of coating your fretboard? Mine's a pedulla and has a nylon coat. Some use tung oil to harden it. Playing a fretless, even using flats, you'll have to do some maintenance on the fretboard eventually.

    Strings with nylon core
    A thick, hard fretboard coating
    Or maybe half-rounds?
  5. thanks guys, any guage that you recommend? i prefer lights. it doesnt really matter though does it?
  6. I've heard that TI Jazz Rounds are just the thing for fretless mwah. They are reported to be pretty kind to fretless boards.

I currently have DA EXL-220 on my MIM J fretless, and can already see marks in the rosewood board. I plan on trying the TI Jazz Rounds, and also plan on trying Diamondkote on my fretless board.
