I have an all maple Squier VM P bass. I would like to make it sound like this:

What pickups could I put into it to make it sound more chunky?

  2. what does it sound like at the moment?

More woody than the RD bass. I'm thinking it might need a J pup in the bridge but Im not really sure. It has a PB 101 vintage sounding pickup in it currently.

I thought the bodies on those were made of Agathis?

In any case, a J bass would get you much closer to that sound. Adding a J pickup to it would get you a little closer, but it's still going to sound a lot more like a P bass than a J bass.

I was thinking about putting a Hot Stacks J pup in the bridge. The same that are on the Krist Novoselic bass.

You'd probably want to replace the P pickup too so the two pickups balance together. But again, it's still going to sound more like a P bass.

Why not sell it and get a VM J bass instead? By the time you buy the pickup(s), get the body routed, and have it installed you'd be more than half way there.
