    hi guys,

ive heard a lot of people talking about cleaning thier pride and joy (bass) with naptha, and ive read that naptha is tha same as zippo lighter fuel!!!

....my status is looking very dis-coloured and grimey from being in a smokey environment. i can only assume its niccotine staining and is not a good look for this bass.

Naptha (or lighter fuel) sounds a bit harsh to someone who has never done this before and i dont want to ruin my bass.

any suggestions on what i can use to clean it, and the method involved would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks

It might help to know what kind of finish is on the bass (oil, urethane, etc...)

im not exactly sure, to be honest, i bought it second hand and i have very little info on it.

is there any way of telling what finish it has by looking at it, if so what should i look for.

    Is it:
    a) shiny, cold and hard: PU or lacquer
    b) Smooth and warm (practically bare wood): oil finish

I couldn't tell the difference between PU and lacquer though. I think PU has a tendency to go yellow with time, but I might be wrong.

If by chance it happens to be a bass with a white finish, the whites natually yellow over time. It has nothing to do with smoke.

its option b so i assume its oil finish. i have refinished a bass with oil and it is pretty similar.

with it being the oil/bare wood finish is there any product you would recomend using to clean it.

im not sure where i can buy naptha in england so is there an alternative that works in the same way.

    FWIW:

you might email Bob Green (seems it is) at Status and get his take -assuming original finish. Guess you could call for that matter since you're in England.

im pretty sure it has been refinished at some point, im hoping to get some pictures posted if i can borrow a camera.

It is a status rhino bass but i think it has been slightly reshaped because it seems to be slimmer and slightly pointier than the standard shape and it has been fitted with an xlr socket in place of the standard jack socket.

i was told when i bought it around ten years ago that the previous owner did some guitar building in his spare time and was selling through the shop but he is no longer around.

i have emailed status about it as you suggested and i will post what they say when i get a reply.
