How do I tell the difference....

Discussion in 'Pickups & Electronics [BG]' started by lustreking, Dec 6, 2002.

  1. I'm thinking of upgrading the pups in my MIM Jazz (as cheaply as possible), and I was wondering how can you tell the difference between American and MIM pickups if they're not in the bass?

    Hey Steve,
MIM and other asian or cheap pickups usually always have plastic bobbins (Even newer American Fender pickups are made this cheaply). However a distinct tell-tell sign is the magnets. Cheap P or J pickups have a large Ceramic magnet stuck underneath them. Quality pickups use individual pole piece magnets.
Even the ones with Large ceramic magnets underthem have pole pieces of course, but they are simply steel rods. Look underneath the pickup.
