The strings go from G D A E starting at the top of the tab. It is the oppoisite on ur bass.. THe thickest string is E, and its the bottom one on the tab . THe numbers rpresent which fret to play, starting at the nut.

Further to Figjam's tips, rhythm may be notated in the tab, but often it's just done by approximate spacing - you need to play along with the recording to nail it (assuming your recording is the same as the one tabbed from!).

Better quality tabs often include a little guide to how they have been written. Also, do a search on TalkBass for something like "read tabs" - it has been covered before several times, including links to comprehensive external guides.
