How do you rest your thumb?

Discussion in 'Technique [BG]' started by bass87, Apr 12, 2003.

  1. I was just wondering how everyone rests their thumb whilst playing fingerstyle. Do you:

    • Keep your thumb resting on the pickups and not move it?
    • Float your thumb up and down depending what string you are playing?
    • Or have you thumb hanging freely, a la Jamerson?

Or does anyone else have any other technique?

I rest mine on either the pickup, or the E string, generally. When I'm using the E string, I rest it on the pickup, otherwise, I rest it on the E string.

PS. Still haven't corrected that dire misspelling of "Kurt Cobain" in your sig? :D

  3. I rest my thumb on the E string or pickup as well.

But I hate those thumb rests though

  4. Still haven't noticed it's deliberate?:D

either on the pickup or B (sometimes E) strings. and on the fretboard for some flamenco

  9. Right now I rest on the B string (5 string) but I want to practice the floating technique. That would solve a lot of my muting problems.
