Now i just picked up a DJ and jesus how do i get that sound, i have a SVT-4PRO, a DJ.
should i set the neck really low for this?
what do you think else would get that tone, i have heard it from Timmy C too.
Would a SVT-5PRO help me cop that sound?

And please dont say "its in the fingers" I seriously have had a hard time trying to find a good tone and think thats something i want.

From that recording I can't see how you could work out how the bass sounded. :rollno:

What you hear certainly isn't what he and the audience was hearing!

I'm sorry, record version or not, I'm still not hearing it, what with the compression of YouTube and my laptops speakers! :D

If it's true, why wouldn't someone say that?

You know where else it is? In the mixing engineer.

sounds like a jazz bass, mixed heavy on the low/low-mids probably with a hint of OD too. its almost got the thumb you'd expect from a P but with a little more bite.

i listened to the video and dug the song so i picked up the album. honestly, after frances the mute i completely wrote them off. that album, at least, seemed to completely lack the soul that they put into deloused, but this new one sounds pretty good.

juan's wikipedia page says he plays with a pick and that his lakland is a lined fretless. that could help too.

the amount of processing a bass signal goes thru when making a record is staggering... no simple amp change etc is going to exactly cop a sound... be experimental, find your own tones and live and breathe with them, make them yours, play well, and people will want your tone one day.

that is very true, i just happened to like this sound very much, unfortunantly it will be harder to cop, oh well the lows with lo-mids boosted sound really good and punchy.

juan has a dual ds'ed US JO. You can see it at the mesaboogie site:

I emailed Brian a few weeks ago and there are no plans for a run of Juan basses.
The DJ i've seen him play has been white with a maple board, not fretless. The fretless I've seen him use is his (71?) P/j Fender.
I'm at work so I can't check out your youtube link, but when I get home.. tomorrow I will check it out.
