Hi I hear this kind of thing quite often in Hip hop... the bass is a little middy whilst there is something else going on and I am not sure what it is or how one might get it...a certain setting on a ring mod perhaps or fuzz or...it's some sort of top end 'rattle'...maybe an imitation lose screw rattle? The beginning of Buck 65's wicked and weird is an example( relatively mild however) of what I am after. Thanks in advance for any insight you may be able and willing to share! Sounds like flatwounds played with a pick, mids boosted, lows attenuated. I think that "in your face" quality probably comes from compression. It's a cool sound, I've never quite been able to nail it.
Thanks! You don't think there is a pedal involved? Mild bit crusher thingy or something like that? I hear this kind of thing quite often in Hip Hop...much more extreme at times but was unable to find a better example at this point...
There might be something in there, but if so it's a trick I'm not familiar with. If there is a "trick", I'd like to hear about it. But I suspect it's high-quality (not a pedal) compression of some sort.
Sounds like flatwounds and wall compression. There might be sophisticated combination of different types compressors.
My "guess" would be that it is sampled bass and played from a keyboard. There's just something off about the note decay. All they need is a trumpet and a better groove and I'd think Cake had a new single.
Turning it up I hear the inharmonic rattle thing. It sounds like digital aliasing or something, so yeah, maybe it's a sampled bass at a low sampling rate, or a bit crusher on a real bass could do it too.
