I play directly into my amp, and always have. I've toyed with the odd compressor from time to time, and have tried distortion, chorus, and phase. But those weren't even brief dalliances, just tried those to hear 'em.

But I feel like I'm the only one! Everyone seems to use pedals. Who does not?

I go directly to a DI box.

I've never used a pedal on a gig.

Actually, that's a lie: In 1996, inspired by the funk genre, I bought a CryBaby wah pedal. The very first gig I used it, it was stolen off the stage during set break.

Never did in my playing years.
When I returned to bass after a long hiatus, and discovered TB and it's damnable effects forum, I started experimenting.
I've a pedal-board full of wondrous effects now.
But it's gathering dust under my bed.
They complicated my playing too much, and I honestly don't know why I bothered.
The only pedal I use now is a tuner.

I tried a few. I even tried an active bass. Now I’m back to square one. A passive bass and an amp.

It's bad enough that guitarist use them and it gets outrageous.

Prefer not to. Don't make enough to justify them.

I plug straight into my D800+ for gigs. Tuner out used.
For church I put my Pitchblack tuner in between my bass and my Fender Rumble 30 v2, so I can easily mute between playing parts.

BUT :) I spend ~80% of my TB time in the Effects forum. I love reading about effects and watching pedal demos, but I never hear anything that I mu$t have.

I like pedals and I've had bands where I've used 9 pedals and have enjoyed it. However, the gigs that had me plug into a DI have also been enjoyable. There's something relaxing about plugging in and not stepping on switches.

Pedals are tricky. Just because something sounds cool by yourself doesn't mean it translates for you with the band. I love chorus pedals but I can think of two songs in 21 years that I actually used one.

    Pedals are for guitar players.
If I'm using an amp, I use a tuner and a wireless.
    If I'm ampless, I use a Tech 21 Bass Flyrig v2.

Most of my gigs are ampless, where a pedalboard is my "amp". But I do play a gig monthly where I plug straight in to a small amp. So, I'm a 15% don't use pedals/85% do use pedals person.

I would count that as a pedal (my pedalboard, despite having more pedals, does less things to the signal than a Tech 21 flyrig can), but that's just me.

I count it as a DI taking the place of an amp.

  18. Other than the occasional use of a tuner, and or a DI, I don’t have much use effects, let alone something else to trip over..LOL!! That said, I understand that there are a lot of tones one would want that I can’t get out of my bass and amp.
