Just out of curiosity.
Talking about dollars and cents. Not sentimental value. (But sentimental stories are welcome.)

Me? I have an Ibanez SR2600 that is worth $1800. Otherwise, my basses are in the $500-600 range.

OP here - I think you guys might have posted before I could edit the title.
The title was originally supposed to be "How much did you pay for it?" But I omitted the "much" part, so it just said "How did you pay for it?"
My, what a difference a word makes.

Then I decided to change the title again, because I want to know how much your most valuable instrument is WORTH--which is a different number than how much you paid for it.

In case you wanted to know.

I used to have a Veillette, which I sold for an Upton upright, which I sold. I do have a handmade classical guitar, which is my most expensive instrument, although is was sold to me at a discount. Most of my basses are production models that sell in the $750 range. I view my instruments as tools, mostly, and if they aren't being used I sell them.

I have a variety of basses that range from an upgraded defretted Squire Affinity that would take $250 for me to part with to an NYC MTD custom build that I prepaid nearly $7,500 for. Every bass I've owned has been worth the price I paid or traded. Each bass is unique and special to me for different reasons regardless of their monetary value. I like basses for what they are and have fun playing them and working on them and sometimes building them from parts. They don't have to be expensive, they just need to be inspiring and highly playable. I'm happy with my esoteric and ever evolving collection and if I never bought another bass I'm good with what I have for the rest of my life.

Famous last words!

One thing that makes it tricky to estimate value is the fact that we might have customized our instruments. Even though WE may know that the upgraded pickups, bridge, tuning heads, or pickguard or whatever have made the instrument far better in sound, looks, and/or playability, others might evaluate our precious instruments as being worth LESS because they are no longer "stock" with all-OEM parts, etc.

I have a '73 P-bass that I bought new for $330; according to the internet, $330 in 1973 dollars is worth $2,400 today.

I guess the real question regarding value is the cost to replace, and whether or not someone would be willing to pay "what it's worth" to buy a replacement.

In the case of my P-bass, I don't believe I would pay $2,400 for one today; the value of mine is largely sentimental.

I own about a dozen other basses, and I honestly don't remember what I paid for most of them, or the year I bought them. The ones with the highest values/replacement cost are likely my three double basses. Among my electric basses, I have no earthly idea, and it's not important enough to me to do to the work necessary to obtain their values: I buy basses to play, and often keep them to fire old memories, not based on their market value.

I have a Taylor acoustic that now has a market value around $3k. I didn’t pay for it as it was a gift for some pro bono work helping an attorney settle and estate.

I have difficulty understanding the term of "worth". I have many that are listed in the $2k range..... But most people pay about $1800 new...... and their resell value is only about $1500. By the same token, I have a P-bass that I paid $1400 for. "IF" I'd let anybody hold it (and I won't) I'm sure they'd pay up $2k for it. But you couldn't buy it from me at any price. So what's it worth? To be honest I don't think any of them are worth much more than $1300-1500..... Unless they have mojo.... Then we'll pay most anything.
