just got my next restoration project and was wondering if any of you could narrow down the age of it? it's a 3/4 size, flatback w/ the upper bout 45degree bevel/angle.... and inside, has repair notes dating back to the 40's.... I'll try to include a picture of the tuners which should help.
yeah... the grain of the wood does have an odd fleck to it....but I wonder if its a european maple or even beach? the tuners are like some other hat pegs Ive seen but these dont have wooden pegs with knobs. just steel shafts that are flat just past the gear. with brass plates where they mount to the scroll.
We need high resolution pictures of more of the instrument. Especially where the label would be inside.
yeah I know thats a crummy pic. but all I had on my phone. and no label or trace of one. I'll take some better shots and post.
The Czech basses that I've seen like this have been from pre-WWII. String length vs. body dimensions might help solve the puzzle. String lengths well beyond 42" on a conventional 3/4 size will lead you to an earlier build date. The prominent ray flecking figure on the neck is pretty common to these basses. Fun stuff!
