True that...my only 4-string is an '89 PJ with silver CAR finish and NOBODY gets to play it but me ! I've seen people bang their bass all over the place carelessly enough to avoid letting others use it. The finish is very thin and needs an occasional Carnuba wax shine to keep the gloss going on after all these years.

I'm hooked on the "growl" of the 80's basses (passive deeper "throaty" sound). I've looked at hundreds of custom-made options and even thought of stripping and custom-airbrushing mine, but I just couldn't bring myself to abandon the original value. I even sprung for a deposit on a Cataldo 5-stringer not long ago, then he cancelled the order on me and now I'm glad. I'll never be able to replace this beauty and I think I'll have it buried with me when I go, ha

An A neck is awesome and not too common. On a CAR bass....well, that's superduper cool. I have a few A-neck'd basses from the early 70's but no CAR. Very nice. If you can find the "70's bass love thread", please post some pics in there.

Correct. That does look like a B though. Still, in '72 there were a bunch of B necks that were between 1.625 and 1.5. In fact, that's what the Nate Mendel sig bass is modeled from.

Yeah it’s a B neck. I wish it were an A neck. But doesn’t matter to me- it plays so nice, I’ll take the 1.6 or whatever it is.

Were the custom colors painted differently in the 1970s? ?I mean, usually they are full of thick fullerplast etc. But MY '74 CAR is worn to the wood and has two layers: gold and red on the top.. no fullerplast! Very light!

So, Fender did not spray fullerplast on their custom color guitars in the 1970s?

Is it a custom color over a burst? The bursts are typically pretty thin undercoats since the grain could be seen.

No, it's just plain CAR. I see red transulcent, gold and bare wood.

Nice! I like the light walnut strip too.
Is the wood ash or just really scratched so it looks like grain?

I swapped out the Hi Mass bridge for the Fender '58 because the E & A strings were way off over the poles without ability to adjust.

Changed the pup to a Model P because I wished for a bit more mid-bark tone, mission accomplished.

This Mendel weighs in at 8.4 lbs. Nice playing neck on it.

I'm real happy with this P.

i don't know if it was mentioned in this thread but in 1972 a custom color upgrade cost $25 more than the standard sunburst finish on a P bass.

John! The Firemist Gold is going strong! Current backup is the Shell Pink too!
Someday, when I find a suitable candidate, I need to get an early 70's to you for a Candy Apple!!
