How Thin can I shave my neck?

I just acquired a Fender Deluxe Jazz 24.

The neck is really "clubby" and the thickest neck of all
my 10 Jazz Basses. (.90" from the surface of the 1st fret
to the back of the neck) I'd prefer .75" or even slightly thinner.

It's a "U" to "D" shaped neck carve and feels like a baseball bat in my hand.

I love the bass otherwise and want to shave the back of the neck but have heard there could be truss rod issues if
    I remove too much material.

How much can I take off safely?

  2. Go 'til you hit the truss rod then back up a bit.
Jordan Frerichs could tell you all about that:smug:

My best piece of advice is to have the J bass with the best feeling neck within reach while you are shaving the neck and keep checking between the two. Might as well try to get as close as you can to your favorite. I started with 100 grit sandpaper and sanded until I felt I was close. Then, I went to 200 until it matched. Use 400 and 600 to get the finish. Some folks like to go higher than that, but I opted not to. Just one more thing, I did mine by hand.

I haven't heard back from Jordan Frerichs yet, but in the meantime is there anyone else with some knowledge how
deep the truss rod is buried in Fender necks?

For example, are they all say . . . 1/4" under the fretboard? or

maybe say . . . 1/4" from the back of the neck?
are they all different and unique?

Basically I'm trying to figure how I can determine how
thin I can safely take down a Fender Jazz Neck.

As soon as my Mighty Mite neck shows up I am going to shave it down. I don't think I will go more than 1/8.

Please let us know how it turns out.

Any helpful advice would be welcome.

If it's anything like the fender guitar neck cutaways, it looks like the truss rod bows twards the center of the back of the neck, so I wouldn't shave anything from the center, just change the back profile.
