buy used gear at a local shop (i.e. NOT guitar center or SAM ASH)

...youll likely find a better amp than you would be able to find for brand new at the same price range, albeit used.... and more than likely it will be a better shopping experience as their wont be 40 people playig around there and not buying anything

 

300 @ 4ohms, 180 @ 8 ohms. I run a 4 ohm load.

 

Go used, except for maybe the cab. Here's what I just got:

- New Avatar B212, 4 ohms, delivered $349

- Used Stewart World 1.2, 1200 watts @ 4 ohms, $425 on ebay

- Used SWR Grand Prix, $275 local purchase

Total $1049, give or take (need a new speaker cable for the Stewart, etc.)

You could save some by buying a cheaper power amp.

Used SWR Workingman's 410T ~ $300-500 - 400W @ 8 ohms

You could look into used gear. Used amps typically run for half what new gear sells for. Good deals on used equipment can be found on www.musicgoround.com or ebay.
