I think a lot of people here would love to see you take on Joy Division/New Order, The Smiths and The Cure. Especially if you used some dirt.
Post punk is a big influence on me, esp Killing Joke and early FNM (who wanted to be like Killing Joke). In lieu of chorus, I go for a bright bass and overdrive. Playing: 808D.mp3 - picosong Playing: 51317_I5+SM57.mp3 - picosong Playing: 915a.mp3 - picosong Playing: DummyDarkoB.mp3 - picosong
I’m going to take your advice on that AND add some distortion. I think it’s a fantastic idea and has been requested, so...there it is! I need to do it! Any songs in particular that you think have incredible tones I could try to emulate?!
Ps: do you mind if I add your quoted request on my video? It would just show your user name...if that’s ok? It’s all bass players/lovers on my channel
New Dawn Fades immediately comes to mind for awesome Peter Hook bass tone. Epic song, epic bass sound.
I'm not familiar with that commercial Goth stuff, but post punk to me is of course Jah Wobble, the band above with Mr Hook, but also Mic Karn, Japan Dave Allen Will Heggie Simon Raymonde and on this side of the pond, Michael Lachowski (playing an Aria) in Pylon
I appreciate both that you respond to comments and that you did a video about Goth/Post Punk bass tone (something not a lot of people talk about here). Got any tips for writing gothic basslines. I've found turning the rate on my CE-5 (works with any decent chorus pedal) up to at least 2 o'clock gives me a nice Gothic/Halloween feel to my tone (both on guitar and bass). Also you're very pretty and I hope you have a nice day.
Thank you! It's good to hear, it does take a lot to keep up with comments, but it's fun! When I'm writing a post punk style gothic bass line, I usually turn on some effects and kind of zone out and just play. I pedal the strings a lot, and stick to only about 3-4 notes and look for a compelling melody using those along with open strings. You'll know once you hit something that is original and melodically compelling, then you've got something! Then, I just figure out chord changes from there as to where the song will go. I hope this helps! Tell me if it did, and if the instructions were clear. Thanks!
