Im not sure if this should go in setup or here, it kinda depends on the responses.

I have an Essex Fretless P with a maple fretboard. I am wondering how do i get that famous "muah" sound of a fretless. Should i lower my action to get more fretboard buzz? (i have very little/none) or is it more of a technique thing?

Mwah is more of a side effect of low action, so yes, lower away. It can also be accentuated by bridge pickup favoring, which you cannot do, so favor the mids on your amp.

Geez, now we have to silence Figjam. I hate when that happens.

Pac, since this was your screw-up, I'll hold his head and you whack him with the Ripper.

    The fretted Ripper.

Hey Pac, I seem to get more mwah by using more of the neck pickup, maybe that's just me. But I agree, lower action and boosting mids helps. And can't forget left hand technique!!

It was a joke, Figjam... a joke about how you now know "too much":D... because Pacman let you in on the real deal instead of the standard "mojo" line.

That's all. You're still due for a beating but at least now you know why.

    BTW that was another joke;)

The strings sould sit low enough to buzz, but high enough not to choke- to give you dynamic flexibility. Also, try playng with flatter-than fingertips. Flatter fingertips help a pleasantly controllable buzz develop. BUT, compensate your fretting "center" as the witness point will need to stay close to the front of your finger just at your target. Use a light gauge string. Straighten your neck. Play on the pickups. Taste it. Hone it. Listen. Feel, feel, feel. Learn to use more of a horizontal attack, but be nice to your right wrist. Breathe.

THat got more and more like an emotional poem as you went on.

Well just an update, i tried everything that everyone said and now i ge pretty nice muah. Ive been quite adicted to the fretless and barely play my fretted except for slapping. Ive constantly been tossing in vibratos and slides into songs to add a nicer touch and it sounds great.

  16. Using some vibrato would help too.
