I was wondering if there's a way to play the G and D strings to make it growl. Right now it feels a bit bright when I play it.

Growl means many things to many people. Try to narrow it down a little.

Playing closer to the bridge will usually bring oput more of the mid/upper mid frequencies that are a big part of growl. Digging in harder also makes a bass growl more. Beyond that I thinks its more what rig you are using.

Cut your treble and boost your mids a little.

And play closer to the neck.
