You can remove them by peeling them off, the use "Goo Gone" to remove the adhesive residue. Wonderful stuff for just this type of problem, It is also citrus based and will leave no lasting residue.

On a hard finish, I've just scraped them off with a credit card and then used lemon oil to remove the residue...

Lighter fluid will also clean up any gummy or dirt residue.

Hair dryer. I haven't had any problems. On "high" about 5" away for around ten seconds. The credit card already recommended sounds good. I have just used a fingernail to get them started and they come right off. Good luck.
  9. WD40 works good also for residue removal.

Detachol. It's actually for removing adhesive from skin, so it is very gentle. It is very effective, though.

Dectachol is an overpriced specialty marketed bottle of mineral spirits. Always read the MSDS of any new to you chemical.
