Hi, just bought a CIJ Jazz Bass ser P029984 and was wondering if there was anyway to tell if it had the USA pick ups in it? Also how would you tell if it was Alder, Ash or Basswood?

I remember from sometime back there was a website for Japanese guitars where you could type in your serial number and it would not only give you the year of the guitar but the series, detailed info as well. Can't seem to find it again? May have just been for guitars though maybe.

    P1000302.

    P1000303.

Japanese Fender Basses come in two flavors: one with US pickup and the other one has Japan pickup. Those with US pickups have Alder or Ash body while those with Japan pickup have basswood body.

Also the model name says it. PB62-78US means Precision '62 RI with US pickup, price starts from 78,000 YEN. PB6260 means '62 RI with Japanese pickup, price starts from 60,000 YEN.

Also the '57 and 62' RI with US p/u have alder body while the '70 RI has ash or alder body.

All basses with Japanese pickup whether standard or RI have basswood body.

Check the pickup cover. The US pickup has smoother edges while the Japanese pickup has a sharper edges.

Nice looking bass, how does she sound?

If it, good who cares? If ok, swap the pups with some NJ4s.

Most visual giveaway is the tuners (assuming everything is stock)!

    This is higher (US) model:

This is lesser (IMHO equally good) model:
