How to tell if you have excessive fret wear?

I've heard a lot about fret wear but I've never really encountered it. I bought a 9 year old bass that plays beautifully but I'd like to know how to check for the signs. The tops of the frets aren't perfectly rounded anymore and they are a little shiny. The sustain is fine and I can't seem to find any obvious dead spots.

What are the symptoms of fret wear?

EDIT: Did a Google search and found what I needed. Thanks.

  2. deep scratches, unlevel, buzz (sometimes, can be other things also ), dips in the frets.

Really just look and if it looks like its a deformed fret, thats fretwear.

Also look to see if its been re leveled a few times, if they are very low, and the fret is very wide, thats a good indication
