Hi all. Some of you may have seen/contributed to the other post I did - thanks a lot if you did! (sorry for reposting the questionnaire).

I'm doing a project on the usefulness and effectivity of online commmunities to musicians; filling out this short questionnaire would really help me form a more solid, concrete view on the whole concept.

Been a member since: April 2002, so I think around 43 months.
    Log on daily.
Probably an hour or two here a day.

All options -- ten. This is the best internet community I have ever seen, bar none.

What a fascinating undertaking! Is this for a class or just personal curiosity?

The reason I ask is because you seem to be attempting to get an accurate measure of a very subjective thing.

TBers' ages, knowledge and levels of proficiency vary greatly and our membership is comprised of 100% beginners to 100% pros and everything in between. How do you know, then, if one member's definition of 'excellent' is the same as another's? Who's the standard and who's to say it's more correct than someone else's?

Also, which other sites are you polling?

    I've been here since 1998 - aopproaching 7 years!!

I log on daily, when I'm not somewhere else - like away holidaying by the Mediterranean or at Jazz Summerschool etc. etc.!! ;)

I spend as many hours as I have to wait for large files to download and/or the topic(s) at hand interest me!! ;)

All of the other things mentioned, vary dramatically between poor and excllent...

So I have seen some of the worst advice every given on TB and I have also seen some of the best ...:)

The trick is to be able to find what you need - as I am in Data Mining...I'm OK with this - but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to others!! ;)

My personal progress has been entirely down to how much time I have practiced and how much time I have spent playing with other people - TB has usually been a distraction to this ....;)

Although it has helped maintain interest in the subject, which I suppose counts for something!! :)

Social presence within the community...wt... ...eh?

    How about anti-social presence.....;) ?

The research isn't so much investigating how effective, or productive, online communities are to an individual - ie based on their literal progress during community parcipitation. Instead, the report focuses on how useful online communities are, referring to the subjective, as you said, views and opinions of its users. The main aim is to not only to assess the subjective 'value' of online communities, but to identify any strengths and weaknesses in order to use them for future improvements of such communities.

Cheers for the input to all ye who filled it :)

Online communities like TB are generally "self-selecting" - the only way I can see of "improving" them, is to somehow filter out the duffers, the timewasters, the poseurs etc..

Maybe then you'd be left with the pefect online community - but you'd probably be on your own!! :D

PS - what does "Social Presence within community" actually mean?

Social Presence refers to the ability of participants in a community of inquiry to project themselves socially and emotionally, as ‘real’ people (ie, their full personality), through the medium of communication being used (Garrison, Anderson, and Archer 2000).

    :p

I should've included that before, really. Incase anyone didn't guess, my reports due on tuesday and I kind of only started it on thursday night... eep!

As opposed to projecting an imagined or false personality... :eyebrow:

I really don't know how you can quantify that.... :meh: ?

If a person is perpetually misunderstood - is that down to the way TB is set up, or more likely, how empathetic/intelligent/aware etc. the users are....? ;)

Computer systems would be so wonderful if it wasn't for the idiots using them!! ;)

Note I'm not sure what you mean by "social presence in the community". Are you referring to how socially accepted I feel in the community or exactly what?
