Howdy... new guy here...

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by Hackster, Apr 29, 2003.

  1. Been lurking for awhile, just joined a couple days ago. My first post will be in praise of my new (used) fretless Godin Acoustibass, snagged on ebay last week. It arrived yesterday, and... wow. Been lusting after one for awhile. I like the P-bass shape of this predecessor to the current A-4's and A-5's better than the new ones, though I've heard that the new ones have a more "acoustic" sound (haven't played one) and I'd really prefer a 5-string, but they didn't make 5's in this early model to my knowledge. At any rate, y'know how it feels to have a new instrument that just speaks to you? Really inspires you to play? This'un does it for me. I'm in love. (It don't take much, I reckon.) I have their Acousticaster 6-string as well, and it's a damned fine instrument too.

I play in a part-time roadhouse rock/blues/R&B cover band. Can't wait to break out the new baby at the wedding gig this weekend. Slow ballads, walking lines on blues tunes... oh, yes.

  2. Congrats on the new bass. There is almost no better feeling than getting a new quality instrument. Do you have any pics by chance?:)
    P.S. Welcome to the board!!

Glad you're here!! Hope you'll find this board informative as well as entertaining!!

A couple of things for you..

    1. Read the FAQs and the Newbie threads located at the top of the subforum. Lot of good info there.

    2. Bass porn is good!! Post lots of pics of your gear!! :)

    3. John Turner doesn't really exist. He's just an "alter-ego" that we supporting members take turns assuming from time to time. The pics that you see here posted of "John" are actually of a guy named Billy Wayne Millsboro. Yes, those were actually his basses but he died horribly at a gig one night. It appears he tripped over the drummer's kick mic cord and impaled himself on the upper horn of the double-neck bass he's so often pictured with.. RIP Billy.. we really miss you!! :(

Anyway, again welcome to Talk Bass!! Glad you're here!!

    yes yes welcome...

I hope you have fun here.. i surely do.. probably too much at times..

oh and.. its against the law here to post about your bass(es) and not have pics.. thats such a tease... we don't like that much ;)
  7. Thanks for the welcome, y'all. I'll try to get some pics up in the next couple days and my profile filled out. In the meantime, more gear info... Main gigging bass is a Yamaha RBX-7-something-or-other 5-string that I picked up cheap (also on ebay) when I just got too paranoid about carrying my Leo-era Stingray (now, *there's* some bass porn!) to the low-rent dives we play. Also have a little Washburn fretless with an active EMG P/J set that'll go on the block now (quick story on that one-- found it in a pawn shop, autographed on the back by Vic Wooten and Steve Bailey, apparently at a workshop or somethin'... but I gigged with it too much, mainly theatrical work, and the sigs have just about worn off!) Main stage rig is a Hartke 4000 (yeah, I know, but it was bang-for-the-buck) racked with a dbx 163x, a Genz-Benz 210 cab, and a 115 thiele cab with an Emi Kappa. I have an original Mutron III that I use sparingly. For smaller gigs I have an old Ampeg B25B, converted to 5881's, that's to die for with a newer SVT 410E cab.

I actually have a bunch more guitar gear than bass gear-- handful of Fender tube amps, a '59 Bassman clone that I built, couple Teles, a Strat, couple Gibsons, Taylor acoustic, buncha effects, etc. etc. Finally gave in to the reality that my big fat fingertips are built for thumpin' instead of twangin' (besides, as we know, the hotties ain't dancin' to the guitar solo, right? :p )

Anyways... thanks again for the welcome.

I agree, that you HAVE to post pics, otherwise the 'JT collective" will post their mythical "cat + basses + sofa" photo.

  12. Welcome and congratulations for the Acoustibass! I had a fretless A4 a couple years ago and the thing sounded really great! But I have a nasty habit of getting rid of everything. :(
  13. But... But... What about his band? Darn, I heard two of their tunes! The bass playing is great! I guess you have to be a supporting member to know the truth...
