I´m registered in this Forum for a quite long time (as a "dead-member")and so I don´t know the habits of other members but once in life it´s the first time and so I try to make suggestions too. Please don´t be confused about my english I´m from austria and so I´m normally used to talk german.
I´m quite interested in building or improving basses for example I´ve been thinking about a self tunig bass-guitar...is there sombody who have heard about that? Is a self-tunig bass somthing old fashioned who erverybody know´s about but I haven`t heard the news? Do you think it´s somthing new or somthing who sounds intresting or impossible....well however pease tell me your opinion about that. thank you

    Hallo Anton!
    Willkommen bei Talkbass!

There are one or two electronic tuners out there that can tune a string automatically (Robotuner by Gibson(?)).

But it would be much too bulky and heavy as a fixed installation on a bass (keep in mind that you need 4 to 7 devices).

It would be much too neck-heavy. I guess pretty ugly too.

And tuning a bass is so easy. It takes only a few seconds by hand.

of course you could get a grphite/composite necked bass, tune it once and forget it.

  4. Willkommen, too, Anton (that's one of the few words I know  ).

It sounds interesting because it sounds impossible. But, I believe anything is possible.

    Three big obstacles, to my non-technical, non-mechanical, mind would be;

    1. Compensating for the way strings stretch over time

    2. Compensating for the inevitable detuning of strings due to repeated, aggressive, playing

    3. Compensating for the effects of humidity/heat on the neck/body

    Anton,

Guten Tag. Ich habe Deutch um die Universitat gelernt aber Es hat elf yare sein. Ich kerne gut lessen, aber I kerne nitch gut schriben. Tut mier lieb.

Was fur ein bass haben sei?

Anyway, sorry for my very, very weak attempt at German. It has been eleven years since I studied it in college. I am sure that Anton's English is about 1000 times better than my German. Anyway, the links below are for self-tuning guitars. They have been around for a while.

  6. Thanks, Chasarms. That was new to me. I wonder if the "calibration" ever goes wacky???

I was thinking in terms of something that continuously monitored the instrument so that it was never out of tune.

Bottomline, it seems like a lot of complexity and expense for something I find so easy for a bassist.

    Hey Rick,

Last weekend, we had just finished playing and a kid walked up to our guitar player with his acoustic. He said, "Hey check this out" and began to play this and that (he's a beginner) and after a few minutes asked "got any advice." Well, Steve (our guitar player) is a loveble sort (especially for a guitar player) and he just smiled and said "The first thing you need to do is learn how to tune your guitar." He then went into a typical GP rant about this and that, and I went about beaking down, but his advise is so true.

Proper tuning is fundamental to everything we do, yet so many can't seem to do it or don't think it matters.

IMHO, there is NOTHING more annoying that a band that is out of tune. That goes for tuning the instruments and developing technique so you PLAY in tune.

I know this is OT, but your remark about it being easy reminded me of how fundamental it is.
