So I finally got the bass restrung and set up. COuldn't be happier so far. First gig with it is later this week. Everything works and sounds as good as people have said. Interestingly, FWIW, I changed the battery and guess what I found? A Danelectro 9volt battery with a 1996 date on it; with no corrosion. Is that even possible??
I played a gig with the G&L for the first time Thursday night. Awesome stuff. Did I mention that I'm happy?? A couple observations.. 1. Having the switches to adjust sound is great, but for me, it was a little hard to figure where they were. Something to get used to. I think I'll set it and forget it.... 2. It is my impression that the tone controls are not linear in their operation. Seems to me like you turn the knobs and there is no effect, then BOOM, you get what you want. Is this just me, or a G&L trait? 3. Much louder than my Hohner which has an active pre. cranked wide open. For that matter, my Series 1o P-Bass Replica is also louder, and it's straight passive. 4. I was concerned about how heavy it felt (haven't weighed it) but was not uncomfortable at all. 5. Was a little concerned going in about the tone for reggae. Concerns unfounded. Yup, I'm happy.
The tone controls do not respond like many other active basses. The G&L controls are "cut only". When they are "wide open" it is really "flat". You can roll off bass or treble as you desire. Since the MFD humbuckers are so hot, it's hard for me to ever imagine wanting or needing a "boost" control on this instrument.
