PRINT THIS OUT RIGHT NOW!!! IF YOUR STILL HAVING UNEXPLAINED SHUTDOWNS!!! On monday aug 11th things got freaky. apparently windows xp users without firewalls and virus protection, (Me) started getting affected by MSBLAST.EXE worm/virus. This worm/virus can affect XP/NT/and ME 2000 users. The first symptoms were a mysterious "cannot load file tftp2580" screen at bootup and while online my system would automatically go into shut-down 60 second mode!! Thanks to TalkBass I first heard of a connection between my shutdowns and the worm. here is a symantec webpage that helped me... http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.html I fixed it this way (backwards method): 1. install and run symantec 15 day trial antivirus package http://nct.digitalriver.com/0001/ 2. When I realised I had the worm and couldn't delete it with antivirus I downloaded the worm removal "tool" http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FixBlast.exe 3. Then I downloaded and installed the windows xp security patch MS03-026 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp 4. and finally turned on the xp wirewall... http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/itpro/securing/enableicf.asp IF YOU ARE ON DIAL-UP YOU'LL BE TOO SLOW TO GET ALL THE DOWNLOADS, SO GET A FRIEND OR NONAFFECTED COMPUTER TO HELP AQUIRE THE FILES YOU NEED! After doing those four things I've been running alot smoother! a couple of freeze ups, but no more shutdowns. a friend suggested a free antivirus program called AVG antivirus software from http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php it has free updates too! Peace!
