PRINT THIS OUT RIGHT NOW!!! IF YOUR STILL HAVING UNEXPLAINED SHUTDOWNS!!!

On monday aug 11th things got freaky. apparently windows xp users without firewalls and virus protection, (Me) started getting affected by MSBLAST.EXE worm/virus. This worm/virus can affect XP/NT/and ME 2000 users. The first symptoms were a mysterious "cannot load file tftp2580" screen at bootup and while online my system would automatically go into shut-down 60 second mode!!

Thanks to TalkBass I first heard of a connection between my shutdowns and the worm.

here is a symantec webpage that helped me... http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.html

I fixed it this way (backwards method):

    1. install and run symantec 15 day trial antivirus package http://nct.digitalriver.com/0001/

    2. When I realised I had the worm and couldn't delete it with antivirus I downloaded the worm removal "tool" http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FixBlast.exe

    3. Then I downloaded and installed the windows xp security patch MS03-026 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp

    4. and finally turned on the xp wirewall... http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/itpro/securing/enableicf.asp

IF YOU ARE ON DIAL-UP YOU'LL BE TOO SLOW TO GET ALL THE DOWNLOADS, SO GET A FRIEND OR NONAFFECTED COMPUTER TO HELP AQUIRE THE FILES YOU NEED!

After doing those four things I've been running alot smoother! a couple of freeze ups, but no more shutdowns.

a friend suggested a free antivirus program called AVG antivirus software from http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php it has free updates too!

    Peace!

  2. YEAH! Rock on, I beat it as well, managed to put a firewall up long enough so I could download the patch....

It's a right little git tho, until you sort it!

For any of you on a work-based LAN, net access via a proxy, we just got the virus here (Yell.com, UK)

There are apparently 3 files that might be the source, these are as follows:

    TEEKIDS.EXE
    MSBLAST.EXE
    PENIS32.EXE

Just find 'em and delete 'em. Buggers.

  6. They reckon when people who make viruses get a copy of this worm they will make it worse...:(

I didnt get it...dont have a firewall either just gotta keep doing auto updates for XP and Anti-Virus programs

  10. There is supposed to be an updated version of the worm coming out today (Friday) which will spread faster and be harder to get rid of/get protected from. Good luck to all in this time of assholes who feel the need to share their hatred of microsoft with us because their not as good as them. ~ Tyler

  11. Has anyone had one of those pop-up ads come up that try and make you think you have this virus?

A screen comes up saying that you have contracted the msblast virus and that your system will shutdown in 60 seconds. If you click anywhere on this screen, pop-up ads will load for an antivirus program they want you to buy. I just hit ctrl-alt-del and closed the first screen and have seen no adverse effects since.

I don't think my computer could be infected anyway, since I am running windows 98 and am protected by ZoneAlarm.

Eh. It was a sub par worm anyway. Not really a good hack. I'm kinda insulted that something of that calibier was even on my computer for a whole 5 mintues.

It was as simple as deleting the files, and turning off system restore. Apply patch. Woopy.

I say we bring back the viruses of yesterday.

    Jerusulem virus, anyone?

    And get an electric car.

They might be better than their counterparts, but a real pain in the ass to use. For more reasons that one.

I love my Computer with Red Hat on it, but it's an ideal more than a practical OS, simply because of microsofts monopoly on everything.
