If you know the key or keys of the songs you are playing, then you will know all the notes within that key, and you can basically invent your basslines from those particular notes. Think of a simple walking bassline; it hits the root notes, but it also goes through many other notes that are not in sync with the guitar player-this is because the bassist is playing in a specified key, so none of the notes will sound altogether wrong, even if you don't hit the root. You can play notes that are not in the same key as well, but you may want to focus on the basics of keys for now.

If you mean that you can't write a bassline that doesn't simply follow the guitar parts, then I'd suggest learning how to play some songs that don't do this to give you an idea of how it works. Try writing a line that follows the drums, not the guitar, but stays in the same key as the guitarist is playing in.

hey.....good advice above.....here is another suggestion.......I have to improvise a lot; so a good start is the arpeggio method. Play the notes of the chord(that the guitar is playing) individually or you may select which notes of the chord to play. Remember...you can play to much..... so start out with a bare bones approach....and fill in as you learn the song more.

Sorta nu-metal, but a lot better than most other nu-metal bands. Minor keys in dropped tunings. A bit like Slipknot.

Hey Obsolex...did u figure out what an arpeggio is yet?......It is the notes of a chord played individually.

    :D :D :D

Mudvayne is a band, not an actual style. He meant "in the style of Mudvayne". Nickelback is pretty much a straight-ahead rock band-not like Mudvayne.

Hey man, don't worry about it. Not knowing a band isn't ignorance.

  12. actually it's the definition of ignorance. it's not necessarily a bad thing though. ;)

Isnt ignorance more specifically the rejection to learning new things?

He asked to know, so I guess he was being the opposite of ignorant.

...and a bit like tool, don`t you think?

    -

So you can`t play stuff that will fit guitar parts, eh? I see that your current bass god is Les. You know how we came up with tommy the cat? He had a song. He had that "say baby" sentence. It didn`t seem to glue together. So he just MADE IT glue together.

Try. Repeat. Try. Repeat. Try. Repat. Try. Repeat. Try. Repeat. Try. Repeat. etc.

If you try long enough you`ll get it.

  17. Actually, DHC is correct. Ignorance is simply a lack of knowledge, which is not an insult in any way. Intelligence is the ability to learn, not the sum of what you already have learned.

    Not knowing is ignorance.
Not being able to learn is a lack of intelligence.
Not being willing to learn is an over inflated ego. :)

    Thanks.

Now I will attempt to adjust and use these terms as they are meant rather than how I thought they were meant to be used.

Hahaha... reminds me of a song I had to play in Jazz band nack in HS. It was called "Blues in Hoss Flat" or somethng similar to that. hehe. My friend (the drummer in the jazz band) and I tried to make the hoss flat key signature. It resulted in about 15 different flats in the key sig :p
