I don't anything about amps. Help?

As the title says, I am clueless about amps outside of the combo amp world. Can you guys explain to me what the functions of different parts of the amp are, or just point me somewhere I can learn about amps?

Basically, all amps are going to have a preamp, which does tone shaping, a power amp that provides the juice, and speakers. In a combo, they are all in one. If you use a
Separate cabinet and electronics, you can get a head that has preamp and power amp in one box, or somepeople use separate preamps and powe amps.

Generally speaking (though not always) a head will have more power than a combo,and using
Separate speaker cabs mes
It easier to expand

Lot of stuff in the FAQs. That you're aware that there's something other than combo amps (not knocking them) is a start and shows that you do, in fact, know something.

I'd look at the above links and think about what you do know and what you want to accomplish and proceed from there. There's a lot that can be said about amps, so it will help to focus the conversation. If all you want is a general primer, though, the FAQs are a good place to start.
