I own some... but I don't understand them.

Is there a website for a nice general understanding of effects.

Here's an example: I hear that gates are very useful in studio production... what the hell are they? ;)

But all effects generally I don't understand.

ps. A gate is similar to what the name implies...it's a gate that lets certain 'things' through. Most common is a noise gate, that lets sound above a certain volume through and closes the gate on quiet sounds like static or cycle hum. There's reverb gates as well where the gate closes after a specific length.

Check out www.bossus.com. This is Boss (Roland) they make
stomp boxes and multi effects. Go to effects then look for
virtual pedal board, you can try out all the effects you want
and see what they all do and sound like. :)
