It sounds very full and slightly boomy on the neck pickup, slightly thin yet very clear on the bridge pickup (ESP active hum-bucking pickups.) There is no body cutaway on the back of the bass, which for me feels better than having a cutaway on the back (not sure what it is called.) The neck is fast even with the extra large jumbo frets and 35" scale. The low-B sounds as tight as it can be right now (string-though-body is an option.) The only two real problems it has are: 1 - The ESP preamp hisses when the treble is put up all the way. I never use that much treble anyway, so it does not bother me much. 2 - The output is rather low so I have to boost the volume on my amplifier to compensate. IMO a minor annoyance, as the tone is perfectly fine. Overall a very nice 5-string for the price. After playing this bass, I want to buy an F-405FM (higher-end model) after college and make this one a fretless, like Steve Digiorgio's ESP.
