This is an old old old Flea video. His tone has changed alot since this.

Would a microamp or a compressor help achieve this tone?

For me to get a flea tone, just boost your Bass and Treble and cut the Middle, then play quite close to the bridge and dig in when you are playing.

  3. true...for that tone, you don't really need effects, but just like timmyc said, turn your mids down, turn your bass and treble up, and you can get a pretty sound approximation of that sound

I'd leave some mids and of course some higs and play with my fingers

    And buy a stingray

    ill give it a shot

so what does a compressor do then?

  6. A compresser will kinda put a ceiling on your playing, i do believe they tame your dynamics so that your playing sounds even...when you play too loud for the threshold, it will "turn the volume down" and if you play to soft, it will turn that up a little...basically just evens out your volume, and some like them, others think that it kills your dynamics (i kinda go with the latter group, although compressors can be set to be somewhat unnoticeable)
