what's the best 5 string i can get at this price? I play punk music all the way and am all about high end bite... i've had my heart set on a stingray 5 for a while, but recently played an MIA P deluxe 5 and really liked it too... I want a maple fretboard... i'm planning on getting piezo's on the stingray if i get it.... anyone else have any suggestions, reasons NOT to buy the stingray? I've heard the one-trick pony stories, anything else though? If it matters, i'm playing through an ampeg svp-pro and a megoliath sugggestions, stories, offers on a used lakland w/ basslines.. anyone? thanks for any advice. Brian.
STINGRAY 5, dude go for it, with the maple neck matching headstock and the piezo. It doesn't get more punk that that. With the piezo's you couldnt be further from a one trick pony.

why not? Stingray5 it is. We should be giving you color suggestions now. I say Pearl Blue with black pickguard and black pickup cover, maple neck, non-painted headstock. I think that looks the best. The piezo is a great idea too!! Heres a sterling with the same colors:
Listen to Gman, he knows what he's talking about! Don't get ripped off by wasting your money on a Ray! Get the OLP for 1/6 the price!
Because the 5th string will get in the way and you will hardly use it. As a punk bassist, I know this.
Use financial aid on rent and books. If you are overflowing in cash, after you use up the financial aid, buy a bass.
That is just a generalization. You can be a punk bassist and use the fifth string perfectly fine. I play pretty much exclusively punk music, and I would LOVE to have a 5 string. It all depends on whether or not you're gonna use the B, and since FalsehoodBass says he will, then there is nothing wrong with having a 5 string bass and using it for punk music. Just my $0.02
ok.. thanks for the chiding remarks about where i should spend my money.... i said that only for the purpose of displaying my good fortune to have enough money left over for myself... this is a bass forum, so anyone who wants to tell people where they can and can't spend extra cash doest need to be here... and thanks also for worrying about my rent, i don't know where i'd be without your wisdom... as for the REAL advice, or even making fun of me in the bass context, thanks... Luis, i think warwick makes a great bass, but i'm not much a fan of the sound of wood, Nino... please understand my decline in that there is only one bass like that and i've never played it... For me a 5 string is quite necessary, my band uses open D tuning on guitars (like strung out, lagwagon, metallica, etc.), and i'm not a fan of the low tension from detuning so i need a B string.. plus when playing in D-minor, as the guitarists with open D's really like to do, its nice to have a C to go to. i already have a carvin lb-75 and its B doesn't get in my way much at all. Its electronics on the other hand..... Thanks for the support in the stingray, has anybody had experience with piezo's? I've played one bass with a piezo bridge but it wasn't a stingray, and i won't get to play a stingray with one before i buy. I was actually already thinking blue w/ a black pickguard and matching headstock... oh and emb, thanks for the suggestion, i got my first shot at an OLP today... it was alright but didn't have enough of those shiny round things by the pickup... what are those anyway, knobs? i'd like to get an OLP but i'm afraid i just wouldn't look cool enough and NO PICKGUARD!?! that's just screaming "Not cool"
Hey Falsehood. I just scored $1,500 on a welfare scam. Let me know what you end up getting, maybe I'll do the same.
geez, so the guy is doing what so many college students do. so what. he didnt ask for a value judgement. i say look around for a used ray 5. they seem pretty ubundant and can be had for around 800.
