euh I don't hear bass at all ... I bet it is played with a pick with too much distortion so with lost him completely because he also play the exact same thing as the guitar ...
Are you certain there's a bass? It sounds like mostly kick drum and guitars. So it seems like the key is to get buried somewhere between those two things.
^^ Pretty much spot on if you ask me. There are idioms / genres where the bass plays a critical role in groove and harmony. Unfortunately this example just isn't one if those types of music.
sure a lot of metal band do that but I don't think it is a "genre thing" it seems to have more to do with ego and lack of talent from the various player in the band. I heard some metal band ( that even on the CD ) you can hear the bass very well, some use fretless ( without the tone killing distortion ) and play some stuff different from the guitars.
If I'm curious about a bass players tone, I usually google the player to see if there are any interviews or breakdowns of their gear. I don't know what Varg played on this, but the only thing noteworthy about his part on the album is that he murdered the guitar player, after burning down some churches. He's out of prison now and still making music. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Mysteriis_Dom_Sathanas. Interesting, and stupid. Black metal is inheritently thin sounding, and not terribly interesting bass-wise if you ask me. I do think Varg is a sick guitarist though.
A major part about Black Metal (besides the killings and church burnings) is that the records are purposefully recorded with bad gear. The entire sound was created to be soul less, so fancy gear or anything of the sort is not going to help. Most likely the bass on that record is a cheap passive bass run through a distortion pedal. Also the reason the bands burned churches is because in that area of the world, their history is rich with being persecuted by Christians. To this day, they are still affected by it. It is rather interesting if you read about it.
