Been listening to a lot of Incubus lately and I love Ben's tone, playing, and approach to bass. I liked the first bassist as well, but I think Ben adds a lot to the band. Listening to them has made me realize how much I love Jazz basses! Really wish I could afford a Lakland USA Joe Osbourne too! Here's a great clip of them at Red Rocks:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmyKY7KkIhE&feature=related his solo esque bit in this is class.. also uses a jerry schleff i believe.. class act he is much prefer lances tone but ben is a badass all the same
never seen him use a Schleff. He does have a 4494 body style with J pickups in it. i believe it is a sig. prototype if i remember correctly. lances tone was much more modern with his Warwicks. Loved his tone in "are you in?" with his J bass though!
it may have been a 4494.. im not to up to date with laklands (only know of one on this isle) all i remember was seeing chrome Lipstick Pickups.. Ya im fairly biast about the SS2's tone.. cant wait to get one at 1/3 of the price (yet still have to take out a mortgauge) . ya the red J is some beaut.. kenny is just a all round great Musician , he gets alot of flak for not slapping, but imo (and i was a hardcore incubus fan) he is just a new chapter showing the bands progression the new stuff midnight swim etc is class
+1 I don't care for Ben's solo material or his g**tar playing at all, but I really dig his bass playing. I think he's been adding a whole other dimension to Incubus. Light grenades album is just phenomenal.
i stand corrected. i wasn't aware a scheff was in his arsenal. Glad to help! i'd love to hear your reasoning for this!
Mad... I do not know how in the world you can say that Benny's tone is great. Have you heard any of Dirk Lances stuff? Comon man, no comparison! Dirks bass tone in the studio and live killed anything Benny has done. If you ever have seen them live or seen live DVD's they do not play much of there older stuff which is sad. I do not listen to the newer stuff, I don't personally like the direction they have went as a whole, but getting Benny in there to be was/is a total joke. I miss Dirk, bring him back! Peace,
Here I am playing his "semi-custom" Double J: very sweet and comfortable to play!!!! PS - yes - that is gold hardware....
you should check out this bass: If you scroll down a bit on his blog, you can read about that prototype, called XLS. LINK But anyhow, I have to agree, he has a lovely tone!
Haha! I like his tone for the most part man. Dirk was good and I liked some of his stuff, but I don't think he's that much better than Ben. They are different types of bassist for sure. I started liking Dirk more when he didn't have that Warwick around his neck. I haven't scene them live, but have scene the live at Red Rocks DVD and thought it was good.
Good to know. I don't like gold, but that maybe my favorite lakland design. Thanks for the link! as that bass 35 inch scale???
Well IMO his Warwick tone fit the band perfectly! If you do a little research on his setup you will find that he had a very big rig and had it setup with 2x10 floor monitors, 4x10 cabs for high mid's, 4x10 cabs for low mid's and he sent all of his low end through 1x18 cab's. His studio tone was awesome too. Benny IMO is just this a guitar player that picked up a bass, yeah he does sound alright... but if you tell me his tone and basslines and up to par with Dirk, I will laugh and you and you may also get a kick in the behind! But thats just me, and my opinion... If you haven't already I would just listen to the early stuff and then compair it to Benny's stuff, night and day! Just my two cents. Peace,
You try to kick me in the behind, and we'll have problems! I feel like the only reason Ben is thought of as a "guitar player" who switched to bass is because he played guitar for the Roots before he was known as a bassist. His approach to playing is somewhat oldschool too...I think at least. He plays passive basses with flatwound strings. Two different bassist with two different approaches. Doesn't make one "better" than the other. I do like old Incubus, but I think their newest stuff is stellar as well.
I dont understand the guitarist reference much either. I have said it before, but it doesnt take anything from his skill. Duff McKagan was a guitarist turned bassist, and he gets more praise (and a signature bass) than a lot of guys.
